you wandered in after I had changed back to the old theme

ah, this explains much:) was wondering what everyone was on about, and if I was just severely unobservant since it mostly looked the same. Now I know why..

and yes, I meant alternating colors for comments, not backgrounds, my bad.

Hi David, you wandered in after I had changed back to the old theme. Since then, I've made a new header and changed the colors of the alternating comments. I like them too, since it is easier to see the grouped conversations this way.

I made a version that was less cramped and dark, then decided to come back to my old theme and just spend the time updating it.

I like the alternating color for the backgrounds *gr* The comments actually stick out better, and feel much better grouped now so you can see what belongs together.

eh, I'm not one to ask, and it looks mostly the same to me (of course, I'm late to the party so no idea what it used to look like before fiddling began), but overall it looks fine to me. All the navigation tools and whatnots are still where I got used to them being, so that's cool.

The relentless white of the background is a bit much, at least IMO. It's like these vast, open spaces unfilled...

But the header is kickass, I like it.

I'm trying Firefox this time to check the spellchecker and it seems to work. Thanks for the tip. I still don't like the alternating colors for the comments. Stick with the background color for all comments.

Hmm, quite a surprise when I opened the page...

I must ditto several of the comments on the alternating comment colors, way distracting, and a bit reminiscent of the "featured items" purple on e bay listings. Also, the colors are disturbingly tiramisu... make me want to go out for pastry (is this just me?) Must weigh in mildly against the oval photo... a bit too pharmeceutical ad... allergies?, anti depressant?, not quite sure. Some of the antique/ steampunk elements (binder rings, "etching" type face, book illo, and bullets), while delightful in some contexts, seem a bit heavy handed when all grouped together. I miss the contrast of a clean modern page for your retro mechanical marbelized contraptions to stand out against. Thorn branches surrounding your calendar surely make some sub concious comment about protecting your precious free time ! ;-)

I like the creamy color of the page, and the binder rings alone could be very satisfying if paired wityh a bold and crisp black typeface. "navigation tools are easy to, well, navigate.

In response to your update: I like that it looks like an old notebook that was found in an attic of an old house. Maybe it holds some secrets? I do like the alternating color for the comments.
I agree that your name should be a little bigger. Maybe it's because I'm getting older and can't see well. :)

I changed the color of the alternating comments. Does that help?

Dad, you should try Firefox, which has a spellchecker built in to it.

Change is NOT ALWAYS good! This is a instance of where it is not good.
I don't like the ways the comments are alternating colors but I do like the grouping conversations together.
I do like the oval picture at the top center
If you want to make a change that would be for my benifit you would add a sprellchecker for the comments

I played around with this theme a bit myself at one point. My feeling then, as now, is that it's too dark and cramped. But I'll get used to anything if your personal sunlight is upon it.

Change is always good and I do like this theme with the few exceptions that it does look a little narrow in full screen and your name is too small at the top. It should SCREAM "I am MARY!" Now it's a bit of whimper. ;)

The different and vivid color change of the comment boxes are a bit distracting too, but overall, the theme does suit you!

A silly anecdote does accompany this comment.

I was sitting on my comfortable chair feeling the bug of theme change tickling my neck when I thought (and I'm not lying) "Well, there are people like Mary who never change their theme and it seems to be fine."

Lo and behold!

Hey Mary... I could take a look at it, if you like. My one is working on my website, and I know enough php to just about fathom how it works!

That said, sometimes change is good! Just let me know if you decide to try and fix the old one.

Ugh. I just looked at my bibliography. Looks horrific, so this may take more formatting than I thought to look pretty.

Good call on all of those. If I keep this theme, I'll look at fixing them. (Already took out the "This entry was posted..." text.)

Thanks, Chris. The rotating image stopped showing in the Polaroid after my last upgrade. I couldn't make it come back and gave up.

Afraid it doesn't win for me. I was a big fan of your old one, n' liked the clean look. It's not awful or anything, but the other one was much happier!

Hmm. I enjoy the book feel. Not so much the "This entry was posted on..." paragraph in a font size the same as everything else on the page. And possibly not white comment boxes, but more of a cream or beige? Still entirely distinct from the aged parchment colour, but not so jarring, and keeps more with the aged feel?

It also, to me, feels a little narrow (and that's coming from someone who uses Generator on LJ) and I think it's because of the sidebar. I think an extra hundred or two pixels in the main frame would feel better, but then again, this is just my personal opinion.
