My first Zombies, Run! mission

I just came back from my first mission for Zombies, Run! It’s a jogging game that was funded through Kickstarter. I loved the idea of the game, but until today it’s only been available for iPhone. Now it comes in Android and I love it as much as I thought I would.

Basically, there’s an interactive story that’s told as you are running through audio clips. Oh… here, just watch the video then I’ll report back on how my run went.

It went well. I was chased by zombies a couple of times. Once, I managed to put on extra speed and evade them. The other times I had to “drop” items to distract them. It’s very motivating. You can actually see the narrative of the run that I did today, if you’re curious.

The really funny thing, to me, was how often the narrative matched something in the real world. For instance, I could hear real sirens in the distance during one of the zombie chases. Or, when they said to turn and run toward the tower, I rounded the next corner on my route and there was a tower at the end of the street.

The best was my return to our apartment, where my CSA package had been dropped off. I really did get to walk into the apartment with a supply packet of food. 3 quarts of strawberries! Not that I’ll get that reward every time, but it was a nice conjunction.

Am I normally a runner? No. No I am not. I dislike it, in fact. But I told my nephew that I would run a 5k with him and I keep trying to muster the interest. I enjoyed the story that goes with Zombies, Run! enough that I’m eager to go running again. Yay, motivation!

That, to me, is the sign that this is a very successful game.
