Grandma puts entering a new decade into perspective

As the aughts wind down with 2010, Rob reminded me that 2011 will be Grandma’s second time entering the teens.  She was born in 1905.

I know this and yet the mind boggles anyway.

She remembers the Titanic, WWI, Woodrow Wilson, medicine shows, getting the mail by train once a week.  We were talking while I was home and she said that she feels like people aren’t as considerate sometimes, but that she wouldn’t want to go back to then and have to give up her electric lights and running water.

Let’s hope the teens this time around are courteous, bright, and well-watered. No World Wars, please.

Happy New Year.

Ten things I’ve done that you probably haven’t

A couple of weeks ago, Scalzi posted a list of  ”10 Things I’ve Done That You Probably Have Not” and I thought, that sounds like fun.  The idea is to think of things that I’ve done which are unusual. Clearly, other people have done several things on this list but most of you probably have not.

I figured it was a good thing to do in the last week of the year.  Not that I limited myself to things from 2010…

  1. Taught lyrics to Sting
  2. Had my arm pressed against Mandy Patinkin’s crotch (granted with a puppet on my arm at the time)
  3. Snorkled at Þingvellir
  4. Had tea at Ursula Le Guin’s house
  5. Asked Fozzie Bear questions and had him answer
  6. Poached a Christmas tree
  7. Can tell you how to actually get to Sesame Street
  8. Had the Emerald City fall on me
  9. Biked 52 miles (roundtrip) just to have lunch with a friend.
  10. Carried a moose head through Manhattan

By the way, you should read the comments on Scalzi’s blog, which are pretty funny.

2010 Year End Fiction wrap-up

As 2010 winds down, it’s time for the annual fiction review. This was a great year because for the first time I get to put a novel on my list. I still feel like this is someone else’s life.

By the way, if you are reading for awards this year and want to read something I’ve written, please drop me a line. I put my favorites in bold and also included links to the ones that are available in the SFWA member forums.

Portlandia: The Dream of the 90s

I just ran across this video which I sort of love because it pokes fun at Portland with so much love. Watch it and if you live here you’ll know exactly what I mean.

Apparently it’s promoting a t.v. series called Portlandia.

The shocking affair of the airship OR why we were an hour and a half late.

Fortunately, I have learned to leave plenty of extra time when I travel.

We caught the shuttle with no problems but then, not surprisingly, traffic to Atlanta was backed up because of two different accidents.  The shuttle wound up arriving at the airport an hour late, which caused some of the other passengers concern, but was okay for us.

Security was no problem, thank heavens. We boarded the flight on time and they shut the boarding door, preparing for an on-time departure.

Then they reopened the boarding door.  This is generally not a good sign.

The captain came on to announce that they were having some maintenance issues in one of the forward galleys.  Then he came back on to say that the maintenance issue was a short in one of the warmers which had given the flight attendant a “rather severe shock” and they would have to replace her.

She walked off under her own power, accompanied by two paramedics, but looked a little pale.

Sadly, her lack of grounding meant that we were grounded. At least until they got that fixed and got a new flight attendant in.

Apparently this was complicated because of the snow in the northeast, which meant that a light of flight crews were also stranded. The pilot said, “Frankly, I’m not sure they even know where everyone is right now.”

During the next hour and a half, the crew was attentive.  They even pulled a couple people off the flight who were obviously going to miss their connections and rebooked them from Atlanta.  We also got random influxes of other passengers, which I suppose were people who were being rebooked themselves.

We got home an hour and a half late, but with our luggage and health intact, so I really can’t complain.

But for those who were wondering if Rob cancelled out my travel karma, I have to say… no. No, he doesn’t.

Heading back to Portland after a lovely Christmas

Rob and I are heading back to Portland today.  It’s been a lovely trip and I always find myself wishing I’d scheduled more time.  The weather, alas, has completely failed to snow us in, despite my wishing it would.  It is sunny and beautiful outside with lingering mounds of snow on the grass and nothing to impede the roads.

But… just in case people want to avoid my travel paths.  We’ll take the noon shuttle to Atlanta and then take a 4:30 flight back to Portland getting in around 7pm Pacific.  Hopefully, we’ll be home by 8:00 tonight.

Photos of Christmas 2010 plus a snowball fight

Today was absolutely lovely.  In this order, I sat by the fire, opened presents, played in the snow, napped, ate leftovers.  There was some cleaning involved as well, but it did little to diminish the pleasures of the day. Why cleaning? Besides the carnage of the wrapping paper, thirty-three members of our extended family came for the 54th annual Christmas Eve dinner.

Mom and Dad live in the house that Dad grew up in, Woodthrush Woods. Yes, it’s a named house. My grandfather built it.

I grew up in Raleigh, N.C. but since both Mom and Dad are from Chattanooga I’ve always come here for the holidays with only three Christmases missed.  You’ll forgive me for continuing to mention this, but today was my first white Christmas.

Here are some photos and a video, mostly for our family, but I figure you won’t mind it if indulge in showing some of the snowy fun.

Christmas Snow!

We’ve got an inch on the ground in Chattanooga and it’s still coming down. Those of you from places where it really snows, hush. This is the first time in my life that I’ve had a white Christmas. I’m fully aware that the snow isn’t making it under the trees yet but it’s covering the rest of the ground. Snow!

Happy Christmas from the Ellsworths

As a Christmas present, I’d like to give you a short story which takes place between the end of Shades of Milk and Honey and the beginning of Glamour in Glass. Unavoidably, it contains a spoiler so I’ve hidden the story below.

The arrival of my brother and an outing for barbecue

Today has been a lovely day. Although Mom had the house mostly decorated for Christmas, I helped put some additional greenery up and made some arrangements. On Christmas Eve we’ll have dinner for thirty-three, which will be delightful. It’s all family extending out to third cousins.

Meanwhile, my brother and his children arrived this evening making the house feel very full and cozy. The group of us went out to Couch’s barbecue for dinner.  I love this restaurant although my whole pretense of being vegetarian stays by the curb when I go inside.  Mmm…

Safe arrival in Chattanooga

Rob and I had a very smooth trip here. Our flight had a tailwind so we got in at 1:20 and had been scheduled to arrive at 1:55. Then our luggage was the first one off the plane so we managed to catch the earlier shuttle to Chattanooga arriving here an hour early.

We had dinner with my folks, helped with some tree decorating and are now enjoying a fire in the fireplace.
